Tips for
effective erosion control
with blankets, mats and TRMs
Erosion control mats are used to protect soil from rain and wind erosion and
to support establishment of a sustainable vegetation. |
Cost effective erosion control
includes proper understanding of the problem and using the best-value
products for a cleaner and healthier environment.
Properly installed blankets perform better than
sprayed hydro-mulch in any weather condition. |
Diverse, sustainable, mature
vegetation is the solution for successful permanent erosion control. |
| |
It takes time to establish mature,
sustainable vegetation. Proper protection for the soil and young plants
are required until
establishment of mature vegetation. |
| |
Most failures are due to
improper product selection and poor installation. |
Select the most suitable blanket for each application,
the best value product. Strength and durability must be considered
when selecting a suitable blanket. |
Always use a fresh batch of seeds with high
germination rate. Check seed certification in seeded blankets.
Be aware! |
Select a suitable mixture of seeds depending on the
location and time of the year. The mixture should include a seed type with
strong root system, a seed type with strong aerial parts a creeping type
closer to ground. |
Grade the slope or channel or the area properly
allowing sufficient space for runoff water. If not, water will find its
own way by creating gullies and ruining the restoration efforts. |
Make sure to smooth the surface thoroughly before
installing the blankets. |
Always spread seeds before placing blankets.
Blankets will keep the seeds in place, protecting them from birds, wind and
rain. |
Fasten the blankets properly to the ground with metal
staples or wooden pegs. Even the most expensive blanket cannot perform
well without properly anchoring it to the ground. Make sure there is good
contact between the blanket and the ground. |
Generally, use 6" long staples for temporary mats such
as jute, straw or excelsior mats. Must use at least 1 staple or peg for each
square yard. Longer anchors may required depending on the soil type.. |
Generally use 8" long staples for heavier and durable
coir mats and permanent TRMs. Must use at least 1.5 - 2 staples or pegs for
each square yard. Longer anchors may require depending on the soil
type. |
Do not spread soil over an erosion control mat.
This fill soil will wash away easily, wasting your time, money and efforts
to control erosion.
Be aware ! |
All erosion control blankets support vegetation
establishment. They do not control weeds. |
Temporary mats such as jute, straw and excelsior mats
should not be used in water diversion channels. They are not strong
enough to resist strong flow conditions. |
Blankets with photodegradable plastic nets can be a
problem in future maintenance of the vegetation as the photodegradable nets
can tangle in mowing equipment and destroy the nicely established
vegetation. |
Blankets with photodegradable plastic nets also
interfere with wildlife movement and should not be used in wetlands or on streambanks. |
Cutting blankets for planting will reduce their
strength. When planting through the mat is necessary, use open-wave blankets
to avoid cutting the mat. If the blanket is cut for planting, anchor the
open ends to the ground properly. |
Green color dyed fiber blankets will not perform any
better than non dyed blankets. Color is only for appearance. |

Open-weave
semi-permanent erosion control mats |

The best choice for
effective erosion control |
| |
Open weave bristle coir semi-permanent mats support vegetation establishment better than
synthetic and composite TRMs. |

Open-weave blankets - the best
choice for effective erosion control |
Open weave blankets allows
planting through the mat without cutting it. |
Open weave blankets allow
reseeding if necessary. |
Open weave blankets are wildlife
safe as the twine move independently (no fixed joints). |

Always remember |
Failures not only cost reconstruction, but also create extremely
expensive and irreversible damage to aquatic life in lakes and streams. |
Do it right the
first time. Save money, time, our environment and have a piece of mind ! |
