Nearly two dozen contractors, developers and engineers
in Griffin, Ga., saw for themselves how to install a variety of Best
Management Practices (BMP’s) for controlling erosion and sedimentation at
construction sites during a field demonstration on November 18, 2004. The
event, sponsored by the city’s Storm water Utility Division with the RoLanka
International, Inc. and featured a variety of BMP’s including natural
biodegradable products made of coir (coconut) fiber. Participants viewed
DOT-approved silt fence, coir wattle inlet protection, different types of
mats for stabilizing slopes and channels, comparisons of check dams made of
rock or coir wattles for filtering silt, the use of hay bales vs coir rolls
for controlling sediment and stone outlet protection. Simulated rain and
channel flows added to the effectiveness of the demonstrations.
“Decision-makers saw just how some BMPs actually performed when correct
products are selected and installed correctly,” says Hammed Malik, the
city’s deputy stormwater director. “Participants learned how to do a better
job.” |
