RoLanka coir products are made in Sri Lanka and
use only the fiber and dust extracted from the coconut husks cured in fresh
water. The fiber processed from this method are dark brown in color. India,
Philippines and a few other countries cure their coconut husks in lagoons.
These fibers are generally white due bleaching effect from salt in lagoon
water and tend have excess salts. |

Coir processed from the traditional method not
only dark brown in color they are stronger and durable than the fiber
obtained from de-fibering machines.
In Sri Lanka, coir fiber is separated into different grades depending on
the length of fiber. |

Bristle coir fiber |
|
Mattress coir fiber |
|
Pile of coir pith |
|
| |
Longer fiber - decays slower than mattress coir fiber |
|
Shorter fibers - decay faster than bristle coir fiber |
|
Fine (coir pith) particles - excellent medium for plant growth |

Strength and durability of coir products depend on
coir processing type and also type of coir used. |
|
| |
Woven blankets made of bristle coir fiber are much
stronger and and last longer than woven blankets made of mattress coir or
mixed coir fiber |

The lagoon-cured woven coir blankets can be identified
easily by their faded brown color. |
